Hi! It's Maiabee8 from IB, I stumbled onto this blog a bit ago. I really love reading about the work you are doing. I just thought I would pop in and say hello.

A question on MD, does your school have a social worker? It sounds like this kid might have some real bad news going on at home from the sound of his behavior. Baring that, is there a way to get him involved in activities that can use up his energy productively?

He is very lucky to have a teacher who cares about his well-being, and I think he knows it hence the acting out for your attention. He needs something that his ten year old self can't articulate appropriately. Hopefully he'll be able to get what he needs.

Uh, yeah. Google the lyrics to Crank Dat Soulja Boy. Then go on urbandictionary.com and look up "superman" and "robocop." See if you still think "surreal" is the proper word for 200 8-9-10 year olds doing the dance in school.

I love renting! for the most part.

and I love reading about your teaching, and your new life in the gateway city. it really seems like you are learning so much and handling yourself gracefully and adapting to so many challenges ... it's very impressive and I'm proud of you.

Isn't it great to see such progress on the test scores? Wow, to raise their scores THAT much you must really be getting through to them. You were so right to be strict at the beginning so you can have fun now- kids will often meet the expectations we set for them - whether high OR low! Keep up the good work :-)

I'm tutoring 9th grade students now as one of my part time jobs, and I was SOOO close to dropping the F-bomb the other day too!

(And also, my students are also obsessed with flaming hot cheetos . . At the party store next to the school, they get hot nacho cheese poured over them!!)
