Today was a great day. I began the day by getting piled with valentines from my students including chocolate flowers, heart shaped boxes filled with candies, conversation hearts, even a giant I, heart, and U made out of solid chocolate. It was so nice to be showered with love from them.
I was observed by my principal today as well as a district lady who is in charge of student achievement. Thankfully I had a pretty good activity going on and I think they were impressed.
My school had planned a dance in the afternoon for the students which would be a fun Valentine’s Day break for them. In the afternoon word got around to me that M.D. wanted to “take me to the dance.” Yes, me. Watch out Todd, 10 year old M.D. is trying to woo me. Chaperoning the dance was not fun like I thought it would be. It remined me of how horrible a dancer I am and how completely out of touch I am with popular hip hop…and why I prefer to be out of touch with popular hip hop. It was surreal to see 200 8-9-10 year olds collectively doing the Soulja Boy dance while shrieking at the same time. Although I have heard that Soulja boy is on the decline and will no longer be cool in about 4 days.
I shared my favorite kids movie with my students today – Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. They really enjoyed it. At first they thought Pee Wee was too wierd but I think he grew on them. I even caught them doing the Tequila dance later on.
My principal called at the end of the day and wants me to lead a professional development session tomorrow for all the 3rd grades in my district. So much for notice. I said that I would be fine to present on the Math section and then asked if my lead teacher could help with the reading/language arts. I heard him talking later and I don’t think he realized that she originally asked if I would do the whole thing. He really doesn’t have an ego but I would have felt uncomfortable being the spokesperson for the grade when he is supposed to be the lead teacher.
My evening was nice, Todd and I went out to eat at our new favorite restaurant, a Middle Eastern kabob place with the best hummus this side of the Persian Gulf. He surprised me with a classic mixed CD, a bunch of temporary tattoos, a purse I have been coveting and a pair of sapphire earrings. I have been lusting for sapphire earrings since I was about 15 years old so it is nice to finally have some. Then I made him a chocolate milkshake when we got home and shared some of my chocolate candies with him.
